Breeziway

The Breeziway venture began in August, 2007 just weeks before the company founder’s wedding in England. She and her partner, Paul, found themselves in the midst of a wedding reception at a hotel in Bedford, England where they stopped for a glass of wine during a stroll along the river. Sandra was ready for her special day, except for the decision of what to do with her hair. Sandra was totally fascinated by the beautiful headpieces worn by many of the women at this affair. After some research, she learned that they were called “Fascinators” in the United Kingdom and Australia. A fitting name it seemed to her, because she was totally fascinated herself by these fashion statements.  She made a fascinator of her own to wear on her wedding day, and the rest is now company history. Sabbatical from her professorship provided time to explore this new avenue of expression. She studied with a Royal Milliner in London, and Breeziway as a business venture was born.

Sandra holds several degrees in the fields of biology and psychology, including a PhD and two post-doctoral degrees in Neuropsychology, Clinical Psychology, and Neurophysiology. Her career has played out in the classroom, laboratory, and clinic.

Sandra’s longstanding and enduring love of design with textiles began during middle childhood when, determined to create the ‘to-die-for’ wardrobe for her Barbie doll, she sought whatever guidance and training she could from her European and considerably-experienced mother and grandmothers. She designed and sewed much of her own wardrobe throughout high school and several wedding gowns for herself and friends in the years to follow. During her undergraduate college years, Sandra was highly sought by friends to create unique designs for their special events. But, alas, her scientific career distracted her from this love. . . except, of course, for the epic Halloween designs made during her daughter’s childhood.

Sandra’s rediscovery of her passion for design came with the regeneration stimulated by her recent marriage to Paul. Her knowledge of the millinery arts has grown through the study of any vintage books she can find, professional publications, and the tutelage of Royal Milliner, Rose Cory, and Rose’s other students. Breeziway is a labor of love that Sandra nurtures with the same energy, dedication, and commitment she has brought to other life ventures. She is responsible for the daily operations of the company, including the sourcing of materials, design, creation and marketing. She has recently initiated the process of choosing and training protégés to assist with these responsibilities as she carefully selects affiliates to expand the availability of Breeziway designs. The Breeziway studio is now an official intern site for the Detroit Campus of the International Academy of Design and Technology, and. Sandra was recently accepted into the Fashion Group International.
